Buffalo Trace Experimental Rice Bourbon Whiskey was made with corn, malted barley and rice. Corn and malted barley are typical ingredients used in bourbon whisky production - rice is not.

Buffalo Trace began experimenting with things like recipes, types of wood, barrel toasts etc in 1987. Over 1,500 barrels of experimental bourbon whisky are currently aging in the distillery's warehouses. Since 2006 different examples of the experiments are released for sale, all in very limited quantities.

Buffalo Trace Experimental Rice Bourbon Whiskey was released in 2011. It is made from barrels filled on 30 April 2002 and then aged for nine years and five months.

This is a light bourbon whisky, almost delicate. The rice is noticeable although it does not take over. It is crisp, slightly dry, with a quick finish.
