I W Harper bourbon whisky was created by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, a German immigrant to the US who bought a distillery in 1896. He used his first two initials for the first part of the bourbon whisky name. It is thought the Harper part comes from a business associate.

Bernheim is a name that continues in bourbon whisky today, in the famous straight wheat whisky from Heaven Hill.

I W Harper stayed in production through the prohibition years – under contract by the government in the US for medicinal purposes. It was then sold to the Schenley Distilling Corporation.

The brand is now owned by Diageo. In the 1980s when this bottle was produced, I W Harper was one of the best selling bourbon whisky brands in Japan.

Although not made any longer, it is part of bourbon whisky history.
