Four Roses Limited Edition Single Barrel 2011 comes from one of the most interesting bourbon whisky distilleries in the US. As the name suggests, it is the 2011 edition of an annual release that is produced in small quantities. It is also old, spending 12 years aging in new oak barrels, and it is bottled at barrel strength. Each bottle slightly varies because of this, which is why several alcohol strength options are available at any one time, including ABV 54.5%, ABV 57.2% and ABV 57.8%.

The Four Roses Distillery uses 10 different recipes to make its bourbon whisky. The Limited Edition Single Barrel 2011 is made using recipe OBSQ. In simple terms that means it is a straight whisky distillation produced at the Four Roses Distillery using “Q” yeast strain (one of five the distillery uses) and a mashbill comprising 60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley.

This recipe is designed to produce a bourbon whisky that is medium bodied, spicy and floral. It succeeded with Four Roses Limited Edition Single Barrel 2011.

This is not for everyone though. It is a confident – almost over-confident – bourbon whisky. Subtleness is not a word anyone would use as a description. But for those who get through the initial brashness it delivers a unique and complex bourbon experience.
