Seagram's 5 Star Rye is a Canadian Rye whisky, using rye as the dominant grain in the mash. It is a good quality rye that is great value and works well as a mixer.

The brand has a lot of history. It started with Joseph E Seagram, a farmer in Ontario in Canada. He built a distillery on his farm to make whisky from his excess grain. He and his successors went on to build a large company, partly through a significant growth period in the 1920s and 1930s when prohibition was in place in neighbouring USA.

The company developed and grew up to the late 1990s with interests in the drinks industry and outside it. For example, at one point it was the largest shareholder in chemical giant DuPont. It also owned Hollywood movie studios and a number of theme parks.

Seagram is now owned by Diageo, who produce a range of whiskies under the brand, including Seagram’s 5 Star Rye.
