In the 1970s National Distillers produced this beautifully designed half-gallon bottle of Old Grand Dad. It is a rare example of the famous brand from this era.

Today cult brand Old Grand Dad is owned by the Beam Corporation, the company behind Jim Beam. They bought the brand from National Distillers in 1987, ending a long ownership that dated back to prohibition.

Before prohibition, Old Grand Dad was owned by the Wathen family. When the US government banned the sale and distribution of alcohol, they consolidate their whisky interests to a single warehouse which became American Medicinal Spirits. This meant they were allowed to continue to produce bourbon whisky – not as a recreational drink but as a medicine.

This kept the brand alive until National Distillers bought Old Grand Dad shortly after prohibition ended. It is from this period that this unique example comes.
