In the 1960s when this bourbon whisky was bottled, the W L Weller brand was part of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. It has long since closed but it is one of the most famous and romantic distilleries in the history of bourbon.

The Stitzel-Weller Distillery was owned by the Van Winkle family and was founded in 1935. It was sold in 1972 and has since been broken up. The W L Weller brand is now owned by Buffalo Trace who make a wheated bourbon under the label.

Wheated bourbon whisky is where it all started for W L Weller-the-brand. It is named after a pioneering distiller of the 1800s, William Larue Weller. He was the first person to substitute wheat for rye when making whisky, doing so for the first time in 1849.

This example was bottled in the 1960s by the Stitzel-Weller Distillery and is extremely rare. It would make an enviable addition to any collection. More...
