W L Weller 7 Year Old Special Reserve is a very special and very rare bourbon whisky. It was made at the famous but now defunct Stitzel-Weller Distillery. So while the brand W L Weller is still made today (by Buffalo Trace), this particular version is not -- and has not been for many years.

It takes its name from an innovator and entrepreneur of the 1800s, William Larue Weller. In 1849 he made the first ever wheated whisky by using wheat instead of rye in his ingredients.

The brand was later owned by the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which was founded in 1935. W L Weller 7 Year Old bottled at 100 proof (ABV 50%) was part of their range.

To complete this brief history, the Stitzel-Weller distillery was sold in 1972 and has since been broken up with the actually distillery now closed. The W L Weller brand was bought by Buffalo Trace who still produce a wheated bourbon whisky under the name.

This highly collectable example of Stitzel-Weller W L Weller bourbon whisky was bottled in 1957. More...
