In 2006, Thomas H Handy Sazerac straight rye whiskey was added to the Buffalo Trace Antique collection. There are five premium American whisky brands in the collection and each one is released once a year.

The 2008 was the third release and it became a favourite immediately, firmly putting the Thomas H Handy Sazerac brand in the “superior quality” category for most American whisky lovers. It was highly rated by critics and was named World’s Best American Whiskey by Whisky Magazine.

The magazine waxed lyrical in its description: “Fudge-dipped cherries, slightly salty. Spiced cocoa and maple, evocative of barbeque. Lingering fine and light, like the streak of a comet’s trail.”

We are still trying to figure out exactly what that all means. All we know is it is a damn good whisky -- and now a damn good collectors’ item or investment.

Thomas H Handy Sazerac is an unfiltered and uncut rye. Rye whiskies are made with a mashbill that has at least 51% rye. This one is bottled barrel-proof so will hit your glass at ABV 63.75%. It packs a punch, but remains remarkably refined.

It is named after the man who founded the Sazerac company, now a major player in the American drinks’ producing industry and owner of the Buffalo Trace Distillery. More...
