Sazerac sets the standard other rye whiskies are judged by. It is made at the Buffalo Trace distillery in small batches from barrels matured for about six years (there is no age marking allowing the distillery to use whiskies of varying ages to get the perfect taste).

Rye whisky -- whose ingredients must contain at least 51% of the grain rye -- is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The style almost died out after prohibition as most Americans chose the smoother bourbon whisky.

For many enthusiasts today, Sazerac Rye leads the way. It is very keenly priced for a whisky of this quality and is rated very highly by the critics. The taste is full bodied sweetness with spices and oak.

It takes its name from a cocktail made by a French man in New Orleans in the mid 1800s. The name was then used in a famous bar -- Sazerac Coffee House -- where the cocktail was served.
