For many experts and critics, Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 20 Year Old is the best bourbon whisky in the world. It often receives scores in the high 90s – the Beverage Tasting Institute awarded it 99 points out of 100, for example.

It spends an astonishing amount of time aging. For bourbon whisky, 20 years is almost unheard of. Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve achieves it in style.

It is a wheat recipe bourbon, meaning it uses wheat in the mashbill instead of rye. It is bottled at ABV 45.2%.

The brand originates with Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, a liquor salesman who, along with a colleague, bought the distillery they were working for in 1908. It eventually became the legendary Stitzel Weller Distillery. Although this distillery has long since changed hands and is now closed, the family of Julian Van Winkle are still involved today in the production of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve. It is distilled and bottled now by Buffalo Trace.

This is a more expensive bourbon than most but as the cliché reminds: “you get what you pay for”. It can be hard to locate in the UK sometimes, although we at Bourbon Whisky will do the hunting for you. If there are bottles available and you have the means, you will not be disappointed.
