The Pappy Van Winkle brand has three bourbons – this 15 year old is the youngest. That is an astonishing fact in itself as 15 years is an incredibly long time for a bourbon whisky to age. To put it in context, the law requires just four years.

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Old spends its maturing years in deep-charred heavy oak barrels and is “untouched by human hands” for the duration, according to the company.

It is a wheat recipe bourbon whisky, meaning wheat is used with corn and barley instead of rye. It is very high strength coming in at ABV 53.5% (107 proof).

The brand Pappy Van Winkle is owned by the Van Winkle family but all the bourbon whisky is distilled and bottled in a partnership with the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Pappy Van Winkle is named after the legendary early 1900s whisky producer Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, founder of the now defunct Stitzel Weller Distillery. It is his image on the label of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve.

This is hugely popular bourbon whisky with aficionados and enthusiasts. It is not as expensive as its older brothers, but it is still outstanding. Critics love it too – the Beverage Tasting Institute awarded it 98 out of 100. More...
