This bottle of Old Forester bourbon whisky was bottled in the 1980s. It was made by Brown Forman (the company behind Jack Daniel’s) and was bottled at 43%.

Old Forester was the first ever bottled bourbon. In the 1800s whisky was sold in bulk and then bottled by shops whenever customers bought it. There was constant concern at the various distilleries across the US surrounding the quality of the bottling, i.e. was the shopkeeper watering down their carefully made whisky.

In 1870 a man called George Gavin Brown decided there was a better way and started to sell whisky in sealed glass bottles. Of course this is how everything is sold now, but Brown went further. He wrote, by hand, a personal guarantee as to the quality of his bourbon and had it printed on every bottle he produced.

That guarantee is on this bottle, made over 100 years after George Gavin Brown’s astute innovations.
