The Jack Daniel’s Distillery is proud of the medals and awards it wins. It got its first in 1904 catapulting it on to the world stage. This bottle commemorates the award won in 1954.

The story behind the award is fascinating. Jack Daniel’s received word that there was to be a whisky competition in Brussels in Belgium. One of the distillery's top men, Herb Fanning, was given the responsibility of ensuring a Jack Daniel’s whisky was entered.

The normal procedure would have been for Herb to discuss the competition entry with the advertising department. Instead, he walked straight to the production line and picked the first three bottles he could lay his hand on and sent those. Responding to criticism that a specially selected bottle should have been entered in the competition, Herb is reported to have said: “Why, all Jack Daniel’s is special.”

The whisky Herb sent to Brussels won the Belgium Star of Excellence and gave the distillery another Gold Medal.

This beautiful decanter of Jack Daniel’s whisky commemorates that 1954 Gold Medal. It is also a reminder of the character of Jack Daniel’s, the people who work there, and Tennessee generally. More...
