The Maxwell House Hotel was in downtown Nashville. It was grand and opulent and hosted seven US presidents but was destroyed by fire on Christmas night in 1961.

In its heyday the only whisky it served was Jack Daniel’s. That arrangement came about after Lem Motlow, the nephew of Jack Daniel, designed a special Jack Daniel’s decanter in 1905 and sent it to the owner of the Maxwell House Hotel, J Overton.

He liked the decanter so much he met with Lem Motlow and agreed that Jack Daniel’s whisky served from this decanter would be the only whisky served at the hotel’s bars.

The Jack Daniel's distillery released this half-gallon (225cl) replica in 1971 at ABV 45%. This example was bottled in the 1980s.

It was released for the US market and bottles this age are becoming increasingly rare. Jack Daniel’s also released a 1.5 litre version in 1995 for international markets.

This is one for the serious Jack Daniel’s collector. More...
