Diageo interested in Jim Beam

UK drinks giant Diageo – the company behind Guinness and Smirnoff Vodka – is being touted as a potential buyer of Jim Beam. The bourbon whisky brand is part of US conglomerate Fortune Brands. It has interests in spirits, golf equipment and home products but is being pressed to break itself up.

Diageo is the world’s biggest spirits group but its share of the bourbon whisky and American whisky market is small. If it got control of Jim Beam, it would become the owner of the best selling bourbon whisky in the world.

Jim Beam sold 72 million bottles of bourbon whisky in 2008. Jack Daniel’s, the biggest US whisky producer, sold 114 million bottles. Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee whisky rather than a bourbon whisky.
