Fighting Cock has a bad boy image -- it is the Liam Gallagher, Russell Crowe or Maradonna of bourbon whisky. But like these examples, it is not just a one-dimensional attention seeker: it also brilliant at what it does.

For Fighting Cock the brilliance is being a bourbon with a difference. First of all, it probably has one of the coolest names of any spirit. It is like something that would look at home in a 19th century American saloon sitting alongside the cowboy hats and spittoons.

Then there is the drink itself. Fighting Cock is made by Heaven Hill and is aged for six years. The brand's website has a great quote: “We let Fighting Cock sit. We let it think. We leave it in the barrel six long years before we bottle it so it can soak up a ton of flavour from the charred white oak”.

It is made using rye instead of wheat. This gives it a bit of kick. Then, it is bottled at 103 proof (ABV 51.5%), which makes the kicks feel a little harder.

Although it works great as a mixer, this is not a bourbon for beginners. But if you are looking for something different that tastes great, Fight Cock will not disappoint. And for less than £25, you cannot go wrong. More...
