Before you say it, we know – Clear Creek McCarthy’s is not a bourbon whisky. Nor is it a uniquely American whiskey when just the production methods are considered. However, Clear Creek McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt has captured our imagination and we proudly list it among the bourbon, rye whisky, corn whisky and moonshine on these pages.

It is made at the Clear Creek Distillery in Portland, Oregon, which started production in 1985 and was one of the first US micro-distillers. They import peat-malted barley from Scotland and distil in a German Holstein pot still. The whisky is then aged for three years in old sherry casks.

The result is a fabulous and smooth whisky with a noticeable peat influence that competes confidently with single malts from Scotland, even those aged longer.

Clear Creek McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey is produced in such limited quantities that there can be months when none is shipped from the distillery. So, when available, indulge.
